UP 22%

Picture1

A final sprint in December boosted this year’s TWR to 22%. While the compounded return over 2 years is just a mere 5%, the longer term returns look a lot better and 2015-2019 has just edged out 2005-2009 for the best return over a 5-year period.

It is also interesting to note that this year’s percentage gain ranks only nine over the past 20 years, but the absolute gain of near 100k is the second highest. This is indeed good news as it meant that I only need to aim for a smaller percentage gain to get a good absolute gain.

Breaking it down

The table below shows how the individual portfolio performed for the year. Both cash and CPF (ES3 excluded in this computation) portfolios did better than ES3, but the shining star is US portfolio that provided a whooping 29% return. But hey, I could simply get a higher return of by investing in SPY which returned 31% this year.

Oh well, this is just my second year in US market, so there is a long way to go. I will continue track my performance for the next 3 to 5 years before deciding to stay active or become passive in the US market.

Top and Bottom 6 Performers for the Year

Currently, I have 29 counters in all my portfolio. So here are my top and bottom 20% performers for the year.

I would not have predicted my top performers at the beginning of the year. Who would have thought that REITs can return more than 30% a year and Apple and Starbucks to do so well amid the trade war?

For my bottom 6, only 3 are in the negative territory. Raffles Medical Group is affected by the gestation period of RafflesChongqing and HRnetGroup impacted by the weaker economy. Arista Networks is going through speed bumps due to delayed demand by the cloud titans.

Year 2020 and onwards

This year marked the end of my 20th year in investment. It was a fruitful journey and I am grateful for my relative good performance despite being a slow learner. In the past 5 years, I have participated more actively in the investment community and I have benefitted from the various sharing.

I am looking forward to my new journey and hopefully I can achieve beyond what I have set out to do in the next decade.
